J Balvin Lands Biggest Week of 2018 For a Latin Album With No. 1 Debut of 'Vibras'
It also notches the largest streaming week ever for a Latin album by an artist.
J Balvin earns his second No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart (dated June 9) as his fifth studio album, Vibras, arrives at the summit. It starts with 22,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending May 31, according to Nielsen Music; the biggest week for any Latin album in 2018 in terms of units earned. Of its starting sum, 10,000 were in traditional album sales -- the second largest sales week of the year, trailing only the debut of CNCO's self-titled album (13,000; chart dated April 21).
The last Latin album to score a bigger week in overall units earned was Romeo Santos' Golden, which launched atop the Aug. 12, 2017-dated list with 35,000 units.
“I feel super blessed to have another album debut #1 with Vibras," Balvin tells Billboard. “I’m so grateful to my fans for always supporting me and for helping prove we can redefine mainstream by taking music in Spanish to new levels.”
Vibras — released on May 25 via Universal Music Latino — also tallied 11,000 in streaming equivalent album (SEA) units. As each SEA unit equals 1,500 on-demand audio streams, Vibras collected 16.1 million streams for its tracks during its opening frame — the largest streaming week ever for a Latin album by an artist.
Vibras is Balvin’s second No. 1, following Energía, which also arrived in the penthouse in 2016 (chart dated July 16, 2016). Vibras is his third top 10 as La Familia (his first of three total chart entries) peaked at No. 10 in 2014.
Balvin also collects his second No. 1 on the Latin Album Sales chart, and third leader on the Latin Rhythm Albums tally. Energía spent 21 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the latter list in 2016.
The Vibras debut is helped by multiple hits from the album on the Hot Latin Songs chart. “Mi Gente” with Willy William, featuring Beyoncé, ruled for twelve consecutive weeks. "Machika" with Jeon and Anitta, hit No. 10 earlier this year (Feb. 3), followed by "Ahora" with a No. 27 peak (Mar. 17). On the latest chart (dated June 9), "Ambiente ascends the tally (lifting 19-14) earning the week's Digital & Streaming Greatest Gainer honors, while "No Es Justo" with Zion & Lennox ranks at No. 35.
With his recently released single “Peligrosa” with Wisin & Yandel debuting at No. 34, Balvin boasts eight titles on the Hot Latin Songs list. He last charted more concurrent titles for three weeks in April (April 7-21), when he had nine simultaneous songs on the list.
