Laverne Cox Calls First Dance Club Songs Hit 'Beat for the Gods' a 'Dream I Didn't Think Was Possible for Me'
Laverne Cox bags her first-ever Billboard chart appearance, entering the Dance Club Songs chart (dated March 31) at No. 41 with "Beat for the Gods." The track was remixed by Drew G, Chris Daniel & DJ Suri, and DJ Mickey, to name a few.
It’s the first foray into music for the transgender advocate and Emmy Award-nominated actress, star of the Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black and Lifetime’s Glam Masters, among others.
Cox tells Billboard of the track, “‘Beat for the Gods' is a song about celebrating both self-invention and self-ownership. It's a 'throwblack' [intentional spelling] to a certain 1990s NYC nightlife vibe but is also about everyone who connects with the energy of the tune, remixing it for their kikis and parties of today.”
She continued, moved about the achievement of earning a spot on the charts, “It’s a dream come true that I didn't know I had to hit the Billboard charts for the first time. I guess every kid sort of wants to be a pop star. I sang and wrote songs for fun as a kid but I never really thought I could do that. I resigned myself to the fact that I act and dance a little but don't sing or do music. It’s a dream I didn't think was possible for me that I let go of. For years I have looked to the Billboard charts to see what's hot in music. To have my first single appear on the charts I grew up with is beyond special. It’s humbling and beautiful. Thanks to all the DJs who are playing the song and to everyone dancing to it.”
