Imagine Dragons' 'Believer' Debuts at No. 2 on Top TV Commercials Chart for February
Plus, Marian Hill returns to No. 1 & two former chart-toppers re-enter.
Imagine Dragons’ latest single “Believer” debuts at No. 2 on Billboard & Clio’s Top TV Commercials chart, powered by Shazam, for February, after its appearance in Nintendo’s “Switch” commercial. The spot premiered on Feb. 1, during Fox TV’s broadcast of the Super Bowl.
Using tagging data from Shazam, as well as sales and streaming information tracked by Nielsen Music, Billboard partners with Clio Music each month to present a chart ranking the top songs in commercials. Rankings exclude any song that has recently charted within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100.
The track, which hit No. 1 on the Hot Rock Songs chart and No. 3 on the Alternative Songs charts dated March 25, earns the highest debut on the February TV Commercials chart. It enters off the strength of 68,000 Shazam tags, 109,000 downloads sold and 21 million U.S. streams tallied during the month of February, according to Nielsen Music.
The song’s impressive entry is also due to the commercial’s airing placement. The 30-second ad aired for the first time during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LI on Feb. 1, where the average U.S. viewership was 111.3 million, according to USA Today and Nielsen.
“Believer” lands just below Marian Hill’s “Down,” which leads the chart for the second consecutive month.
“Down” -- which currently stands at No. 25 on the Hot 100 and No. 21 on the Alternative Songs chart -- stays atop the chart thanks to its appearance in Apple’s iPhone 7 commercial “Stroll.” The ad leads all songs with 188,000 Shazam tags, 167,000 downloads sold and 22 million U.S. streams in February.
“Down” is also the first song to lead the Top TV Commercials chart for consecutive months since Fitz & The Tantrums’ “HandClap” led the chart from August-October 2016.
Speaking of “HandClap,” the song returns to the chart at No. 3 after its appearance in FIAT’s Take It for a Spin: Whole New Way” ad. Since the chart began in January 2016, the song has spent five total months atop the chart thanks to appearances in two other FIAT ads.
“HandClap” earns its re-entry on the strength of 10,000 Shazam tags, 81,000 downloads sold and 12 million U.S. streams in February, according to Nielsen Music.
The only song to match “HandClap” for most No. 1s on the chart is Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream,” which spent five months atop the chart in 2016 too. “Dream” also returns to the chart this month thanks to its appearance in Honda’s “The Dreamer: Fantasy” ad.
“Dream” last appeared on the chart in August at No. 3 and holds the record for most consecutive months at No. 1 on the chart (four).
The song returns with 5,000 Shazam tags, 6,000 downloads sold and 4.2 million U.S. streams in the month, according to Nielsen Music.
