Bruno Mars Returns to No. 1 on Billboard Artist 100 After Grammys Performances
Mars moves 4-1 after performing a Prince tribute & his own latest single, and new Hot 100 top 10, "That's What I Like."
Bruno Mars is the top musical act in the U.S., jumping from No. 4 to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated March 4), following his spotlight at the Grammy Awards Feb. 12, when he performed a tribute medley to Prince (with The Time) and his own latest single "That's What I Like." As previously reported, the latter song surges into the Billboard Hot 100's top 10 (37-7).
The Artist 100 (which launched in July 2014) measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
Mars gains by 63 percent in overall activity, with album sales (33 percent) and digital song sales (32 percent) contributing his greatest shares of Artist 100 points. On the Billboard 200 albums chart, Mars' 24K Magic is the chart's Greatest Gainer, blasting 7-2 with a 108 percent advance to 66,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Feb. 16, according to Nielsen Music. "Like," the set's second single, in addition to its Hot 100 vault, bounds 36-5 on Digital Song Sales (85,000 downloads sold, up 308 percent).
Mars earns his second total week atop the Artist 100. He first led the Dec. 10, 2016-dated list, when 24K Magic debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
Three other acts who performed and/or won at the Grammys gain at Nos. 2-4 on the Artist 100: Ed Sheeran (3-2; up 35 percent in activity); Adele (11-3; up 64 percent); and The Weeknd (5-4; up 18 percent).
Rounding out the Artist 100's top five, Lady Gaga drops to No. 5 from No. 1. A week ago (on the Feb. 25 chart), she soared 61-1 (up 1,219 percent), thanks to consumer reaction to her Super Bowl LI halftime show performance on Feb. 5. On the latest chart, she backtracks by 62 percent in overall activity).
