George Michael Returns to Hot 100 With 'Careless Whisper' & 'Faith'
The late pop legend revisits the chart with two former No. 1s, while fellow '80s favorite "Last Christmas" rises.
Former No. 1s "Careless Whisper" (billed to Wham! featuring Michael) and "Faith" re-enter the Hot 100 at Nos. 33 and 47, respectively, while 1984's "Last Christmas" lifts 50-41 (in its first run up the chart, having not been released commercially in the U.S. upon its original release).
"Whisper," which topped the Hot 100 for three weeks in February-March 1985, returns after selling 53,000 downloads (up 3,423 percent) and drawing 7.7 million U.S. streams (up 576 percent) in the week ending Dec. 29, according to Nielsen Music. The ballad debuts on the Digital Song Sales chart at No. 21 and Streaming Songs at No. 27.
"Faith," which crowned the Hot 100 for four weeks in December 1987-January 1988 (and went on to become the No. 1 song on the 1988 year-end Hot 100) re-enters at No. 47. It debuts on Digital Song Sales at No. 29 (41,000, up 7,701 percent), while having garnered 4.2 million domestic streams (up 2,049 percent).
In between the two songs on the Hot 100, "Christmas" hits a new peak, as it re-enters Streaming Songs at No. 22 (8.2 million, up 64 percent), while having sold 27,000 downloads (up 177 percent).
All charts will update tomorrow, Jan. 4, on Billboard.com.
