Drake Back Atop Billboard Artist 100; Travis Scott & Lady Gaga Return
Drake returns to familiar territory, while Scott & Gaga surge thanks to their new album & song, respectively.
The Artist 100 measures artist activity across Billboard's most influential charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, Top Album Sales and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
Atop the Artist 100, Drake returns to the summit for a 22nd week in charge, the most time at No. 1 for a male artist and second overall only to Taylor Swift's 31 weeks. Drake dominates despite a 3 percent dip in overall activity.
Rounding out the Artist 100's top five, Travis Scott re-enters at a new high of No. 5 (surpassing his previous No. 6 top rank), as his album Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight launches atop the Billboard 200. He charts with 71 percent of his points from album sales.
Meanwhile, Lady Gaga appears on the Artist 100 for the first time in more than six months, re-entering at No. 67 thanks largely to the first three full days of airplay for her new single, "Perfect Illusion," and its accompanying social buzz. (Gaga has charted as high as No. 15 on the Artist 100, in November 2014, shortly after the chart's launch that July.)
The superstar returns with a 268 percent increase in overall activity, with social reaction accounting for 65 percent of her points on the chart; airplay follows at 30 percent. She concurrently re-enters the Social 50 at No. 5, and "Illusion" rebounds 5-1 for a second week atop Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks.
Meanwhile, "Illusion," released to radio at 11 p.m. ET Sept. 8, and shortly afterward to streaming and retail services, debuts at No. 31 on Pop Songs and No. 32 on Adult Pop Songs. Following its first full week of streaming and sales, it will make its entrance on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Oct. 1, and send Gaga further up the Artist 100. The song is from her first solo pop album since 2013, due later this year.
