The singer/rapper bows at No. 17 after buzz surrounding her English-language debut EP ‘Lifted’ and its title track

Singer/rapper CL, a member of K-pop group 2NE1, debuts at No. 17 on the Social 50 chart (dated Sept. 3), thanks to buzz driven by news of her English-language debut EP, Lifted, and its eponymous lead single.

The cut, which premiered on Aug. 19, has a corresponding music video that features a cameo from Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man. That’s fitting, since the track samples the song “Method Man” from Wu-Tang’s 1993 album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Instagram, Tumblr and Vine. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and engagement.

In the Social 50 tracking week ending Aug. 21, CL received 1.5 million Instagram reactions plus 123,000 new fans on YouTube, according to Next Big Sound, largely surrounding the video’s debut as long as building hype for the EP, which does not yet have an announced release date.

Of course, CL has had her share of success on the Billboard charts with and without 2NE1. She reached No. 4 on the World Digital Songs chart with “The Baddest Female” (No. 4 in 2013) and spent three weeks at No. 1 on World Digital Songs as the featured act on PSY’s “Daddy” in 2015 (it also hit the Billboard Hot 100). She also notched solo hits with Skrillex (“Dirty Vibe,” No. 15 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs) and Diplo (“Doctor Pepper,” No. 11 on Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks).

2NE1 has logged 19 hits on the World Digital Songs chart, 15 of which have reached the top 10 (and one of those, “I Am the Best,” hit No. 1). Three 2NE1 albums have made their way to the top 10 of the World Albums chart, led by 2014’s Crush, which debuted and peaked at No. 2. It also hit No. 61 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart, and stands as the highest-charting K-pop album.
