Shawn Mendes earns his first No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary radio airplay chart (dated April 30), as "Stitches" lifts 2-1. The track tops its third airplay tally; it ruled Pop Songs for two weeks in November and Adult Pop Songs for a week in February.
"Stitches" halts Adele's 21-week command on Adult Contemporary with "Hello," which remains tied for the longest No. 1 stay by a woman and the third-longest domination among all acts in the chart's nearly 55-year history.
Mendes' new leader (and first entry) on the Nielsen Music-measured AC chart is from his debut full-length album, Handwritten, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 last May and has sold 370,000 copies to date in the U.S. "Stitches" has sold 2.3 million downloads. Mendes first arrived with 2014's The Shawn Mendes EP, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 103,000.
Since first building his audience by posting videos on Vine, the 17-year-old opened multiple dates on Taylor Swift's 1989 World Tour. "Stitches" reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 (which encompasses all-format airplay, sales and streaming), while follow-up "I Know What You Did Last Summer," with Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony, hit No. 20.
All charts will update tomorrow (April 19) on Billboard.com.
