Zara Larsson & MNEK Leap to No. 1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs With 'Never Forget You'
The song is the first leader on the list for each artist. Plus, new No. 1s for Seven Lions, Mike Posner & Troye Sivan.
Swedish singer Zara Larsson and British producer MNEK crown Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated April 16) with "Never Forget You" (2-1). The new leader halts The Chainsmokers' 14-week reign with "Roses" (featuring Roses).
Larsson becomes just the fourth female soloist to hit the top as a lead or co-lead since the chart's Jan. 26, 2013, launch. Ariana Grande was the last, for nine weeks in August-October 2014 with "Break Free" (featuring Zedd). The other two: Lady Gaga, who led with "Applause" for three weeks in August-September 2013, and Britney Spears, who holds the distinction of achieving the chart's first No. 1, "Scream & Shout" (with will.i.am) (five weeks).
"Never," Larsson and MNEK's first entry on the chart apiece, netted 7.8 million U.S. streams (up 8 percent) and sold 73,000 downloads (up 39 percent) in the tracking week, according to Nielsen Music, as the track tops Dance/Electronic Digital Songs for a fourth week. It holds at No. 2 on Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs and lifts 32-27 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay, while pushing 17-15 and hitting a new high on the Billboard Hot 100.
'NEVER' AGAIN: Staying with Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Flume (real name: Harley Edward Streten) finds his way to the top 10 with "Never Be Like You," featuring Kai (11-9). It's the first top 10 trip for the Australian producer. The track sold 11,000 (up 17 percent) and keeps at No. 8 on Dance/Electronic Songs. It also grew by 32 percent to 2.5 million U.S. streams.
BACK 'UP': Further down Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Dillon Francis and Skrillex return at a new peak of No. 32 with "Bun Up the Dance." The track was danced to by Full House/Fuller House actress Jodie Sweetin, along with Keoikantse Motsepe, on the March 28 episode of ABC's Dancing With the Stars. Released last Aug. 14 on Francis' This Mixtape Is Fire, "Bun" reached No. 44 on Sept. 5, the same week that the set entered at No. 1 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums. Following the Stars spotlight, the track reaches Dance/Electronic Digital Songs for the first time, at No. 31, blasting 672 percent to 3,000 sold.
SEVEN = 1: On Top Dance/Electronic Albums, Seven Lions (real name: Jeff Montalvo) struts in with his first leader, Creation (1,000 sold). The set is the fourth top 10 (all EPs) for the dubstep and house DJ, who reached a prior No. 2 high with Worlds Apart in May 2014. (The DJ also shares a birthday, March 31, with this author, but we won't research which is older.)
POSNER No. 1: Moving to Dance/Mix Show Airplay, Mike Posner posts his second No. 1 with "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" (2-1). Originally a ballad, the song, also up to a new peak of No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, benefits at radio from its remix by Norwegian duo Seeb (Espen Berg and Simen Eriksrud). Posner first led Dance/Mix Show Airplay with "Cooler Than Me" back in July 2010.
ELECTRIC 'YOUTH': On Dance Club Songs, Australian pop singer Troye Sivan scores his first No. 1 with "Youth" (2-1). Remixes from Breathe Carolina, Gryffin and Wideboys, among others, helped lead Sivan to the summit. The song has become Sivan's first top 40 hit on the Hot 100, having reached No. 23.
