Smith's cover of "Mary, Did You Know" arrives atop the the Digital Songs chart with 161,000 downloads sold in the week ending Dec. 17, according to Nielsen Music. He also dots the list with entries at No. 6 ("Climb Every Mountain;" 67,000) and No. 11 ("God Only Knows," with Adam Levine; 50,000).
Three more of his songs continue to chart on the tally: his cover of Queen's "Somebody to Love" dips 1-14 in its second week (46,000; down 72 percent) and "Hallelujah" slips 35-43 in its third frame (26,000; down 6 percent).
The strong sales of "Mary, Did You Know" helps the song to bow at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 (the highest entry of the week), at No. 1 on Hot Christian Songs and No. 2 on the Holiday 100.
On Hot Christian Songs, "Mary" joins Smith's covers of "Hallelujah" (No. 2) and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" (No. 8) -- both previous No. 1s -- to give him a trio of titles in the top 10. He makes chart history as the first act to have the Nos. 1 and 2 songs and he's just the third (and first since 2009) to occupy three places in the top 10. The last act to manage the latter feat was Casting Crowns on Jan. 1, 2009. (Note: Hot Christian Songs became a hybrid chart blending airplay, sales and streaming data on Dec. 7, 2013. Previously, it was an airplay-only chart.)
"Mary Did You Know" is one of four titles Smith owns on the latest Hot 100. He also is found at No. 72 ("Climb Every Mountain"), No. 90 ("God Only Knows") and No. 99 ("Somebody to Love").
Over on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Smith arrives at No. 11 with The Complete Season 9 Collection (48,000 units; 8,000 in pure album sales). The set had the highest track equivalent unit total of any album on the chart this week: 40,000 units, owed to the strong sales of the tracks on the album. (The compilation collects highlights from Smith's performances throughout the season.)
