Drake Returns to No. 1 on Billboard Artist 100; Demi Lovato & Pentatonix Surge

The rapper reigns for a sixth total week, while Lovato and Pentatonix ride new albums into the top five.

Drake is the top musical act in the U.S., rebounding to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated Nov. 7). Meanwhile, Demi Lovato and Pentatonix vault into the top five, thanks to the arrivals of new albums.

The Artist 100 measures artist activity across Billboard's most influential charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Top Album Sales and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Drake rises 3-1 for a sixth nonconsecutive week atop the Artist 100 (trailing only Taylor Swift's record 31 frames at the summit and The Weeknd's eight). Drake is up by 4 percent in overall activity, with digital song sales marking his greatest driver (43 percent) and social reaction his greatest gainer (up 78 percent). On Digital Songs, he returns to No. 1 with "Hotline Bling" (up 29 percent to 153,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen Music), following the release of its official video on Apple Music Oct. 19.

The Weeknd slips 1-2 on the Artist 100; Lovato leaps 24-3, hitting a new peak; Swift slips 2-4; and Pentatonix re-enters at No. 5 (after reaching No. 2 in December 2014 powered by its album That's Christmas to Me). While Pentatonix's new self-titled album (88,000) outsold Lovato's Confident (77,000), as the sets start at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, on Top Album Sales, Lovato ranks higher on the Artist 100 thanks to much higher totals in radio airplay, streaming, digital song sales and social reaction; her new set's title track jumps 58-31 on the Hot 100, while prior hit single "Cool for the Summer" ranks at No. 42. (Pentatonix enters the Hot 100 at No. 99 with "Can't Sleep Love.")

At No. 49 on the Artist 100, Adele re-enters at a new peak; in her prior 37 chart weeks, she rose as high as No. 60 and had last appeared on the May 30 tally. (The chart launched in July 2014.) She returns sparked by early airplay for her new single "Hello," as well as gains in airplay and streaming for her past hits; sales for her albums; and social reaction. She seems a lock to challenge for the top of the Artist 100 next week, when "Hello" could roar onto the Hot 100 at No. 1 with perhaps record-breaking sales.

Also notable on the Artist 100, country singer Kane Brown keeps building momentum, surging 93-56 in his second week. In his debut week, Kane bowed with 91 percent of his activity from album sales, as his EP Closer soared 90-22 on Top Album Sales (8,000 sold, up 136 percent). In his second frame on the Artist 100, digital song sales take the lead, accounting for 65 percent of his sum, as his track "Used to Love You Sober" debuts on Country Digital Songs at No. 2 and Digital Songs at No. 24 with 38,000 first-week downloads sold. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native has grown his following online, boasting 2.3 million views from 54,000 subscribers on his official YouTube channel.
