The Weeknd Set for Big No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Albums Chart

The Weeknd is set for a rocking start on the Billboard 200 albums chart with his new effort Beauty Behind the Madness. Industry forecasters suggest the set (released Aug. 28 through XO/Republic Records) will easily earn the singer his first No. 1 album with perhaps 350,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 3. And, of that figure, pure album sales could equate to over 300,000.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Sept. 19-dated Billboard 200 chart (where The Weeknd will likely debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s Web sites on Sunday, Sept. 5.

If Beauty Behind the Madness starts as predicted, it would score The Weeknd his best sales week ever, and the third-largest weekly overall unit total for an album in 2015. It would trail only Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (which started with 535,000 units) and the debut frame of Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly (363,000).

Beauty Behind the Madness should also give The Weeknd his third top 10 album on the Billboard 200, following Trilogy (No. 4 in 2012) and Kiss Land (No. 2 in 2013).

The new set is basking in the glow of the smash hit single “Can’t Feel My Face,” which is spending a second week atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Sept. 12). The album has two other top 10 hits in “The Hills” (rising 5-4) and “Earned It” (which peaked at No. 3 in May).

Other albums on course for sizable debuts on the Billboard 200 include Halsey’s Badlands (with perhaps 100,000 units) and Maddie & Tae’s Start Here (30,000).
