Lil Dicky Laughs His Way to a No. 1 Rap Album
Plus: Migos & Joss Stone arrive on album charts.
Lil Dicky’s debut full-length album, Professional Rapper, opens atop Rap Albums (dated Aug. 22) with 22,000 copies sold in the week ending Aug. 6, according to Nielsen Music. The comedic rapper (real name: David Burd) also enters at No. 1 on Comedy Albums and No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Lil Dicky first found viral success on YouTube in 2013 after releasing a video for the track “ExBoyfriend,” which has amassed nearly 11 million global views through Aug. 11. The album and its supporting music videos was funded in part by a Kickstarter campaign, which raised $110,000. The set features big-named guests like Snoop Dogg, T-Pain and Rich Homie Quan.
The set’s title song, which features Snoop Dogg, crowns the Comedy Digital Tracks chart, arriving with 5,000 downloads. An animated video clip for the song has logged 1.7 million worldwide YouTube views since its July 31 release.
In total, 10 cuts from the album debut on Comedy Digital Tracks, including one of his most popular viral hits, “Lemme Freak” (2,000 downloads). The song has over 6 million views on YouTube and was Lil Dicky’s first charting song, when it debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard + Twitter Emerging Artists chart (dated Oct. 11, 2014).
The release of Professional Rapper causes Lil Dicky to debut at No. 47 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart.
Migos Arrives With Debut Set: Two steps below Lil Dicky, Migos takes the No. 3 slot with its debut album Yung Rich Nation (15,000 sold). The hip-hop trio from Atlanta charted album track “One Time” on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs earlier this year, where it peaked at No. 34 (chart dated April 11).
Joss Stone’s Reggae/R&B Set Rolls Into Top 10: Over on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, soulful singer Joss Stone has the third-highest debut of the week (behind Lil Dicky and Migos), coming in at No. 6 with Water For Your Soul (12,000 copies). It’s the fifth top 10 entrance for Stone on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and her first charting set since The Soul Sessions: Vol. 2 debuted at No. 3 in 2012. Buzz around the album triggers Stone to debut on the Billboard Artist 100 chart, at No. 94. The new album also takes a bow at No. 1 on Reggae Albums, Stone's first visit to that list.
