Mother Monster is back -- and she’s rocketed to the top of the Trending 140.
Lady Gaga’s “Perfect Illusion” blasted back to No. 1 on the real-time Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart after the singer-songwriter premiered the song on radio stations at 11 p.m. ET on Thursday before its subsequent retail release.
The Trending 140 chart measures the real-time acceleration of conversation around artists and their music on Twitter.
“Illusion” remained the chart’s top song for more than eight hours surrounding its release. Its ascent to the No. 1 rank on Sept. 9 marked the eighth different day that the single crowned the Trending 140, dating to Gaga officially announcing the song on Aug. 17 through her social media channels.
Another "Illusion" honor: The track was the most-shared song on Twitter in the 24 hours beginning at noon ET on Sept. 8, despite only being available for consumption in 13 hours of the 24-hour cycle. Gaga's new single pulled ahead of the No. 2 song in that span, current Billboard Hot 100 leader "Closer" by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey.
In addition, after the initial Aug. 17 "Illusion" announcement, fan response was so strong that the song generated enough Twitter activity to trigger the song's No. 1 debut on the weekly Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart the following week (chart dated Sept. 3) -- the first time a song reached No. 1 before its actual release.
During an interview with BBC Radio 1 hours after “Illusion” dropped, the singer revealed another hint about the album: It features a duet with Florence Welch.
“Me and Florence Welch did a duet together. I started to work on an idea for a song that I really wanted to do with a girl. You’ll see why when you see what the song is about," Gaga said. “I just thought, ‘Who do I want to sing with?’ She’s really to me if not the best, one of the greatest vocalists in the world. She’s incredible.”
