Watch The Killers Represent Las Vegas With 'Land of the Free' Performance on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'
While the Las Vegas rockers had been relatively quiet the last few years, The Killers returned to rock radio in January with their new single “Land of the Free.” And to the delight of many, the new offering promises a strong album is in the works.
On Monday night, the band headed to their Sin City backyard as the musical guest for an on-location taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Performing their single for the first time on television, Kimmel -- a Vegas native himself -- introduced the band by saying, “We are very proud of them indeed.”
Singer Brandon Flowers tweeted Jan. 14 that the song was in response to the Sandy Hook shootings in 2012 and political turmoil in the United States.
“If there was a single moment that I mentally began to assemble 'Land of the Free,' that was it. In the months and years that followed, America would be hit with an onslaught of more mass shootings of innocents and too many examples of racial injustice to ignore."
Flowers begins the ballad on the piano and is joined by a choir. He sings about problems with America’s jail system, gun violence and a potential wall on the Mexico border.
The band is currently in the studio working on their next record, with a projected timeline suggesting a late 2019 or early 2020 release.
The Killers will be playing a handful of festivals this spring and summer, including the recently revealed lineup for Woodstock 50.
