On Nov. 18, when BMG’s emerging jazz and classical imprint, Modern Recordings, announced it had signed jazz legend Pat Metheny to a recording contract, it became the the guitarist and composer’s first new label home in over 20 years.
Metheny’s signing was the biggest yet for Modern Recordings, which was established in November 2019 under the leadership of senior vp Christian Kellersman, who served in the classical and jazz department at Universal Music in Germany for over 13 years. Now, the label is gearing up for Metheny’s first release under the deal, Road to the Sun, out March 5. The album will feature two new compositions by Metheny, performed by guitarist Jason Vieaux and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.
“The album that Pat is doing for us is nothing [anyone] ever heard [from] him before -- he steps on new ground,” BMG executive vp, global repertoire and marketing Fred Casmir tells Billboard. “He redefined classical guitar literature and brought it to the next level, and once again he's proven that he is a really groundbreaking artist who's never looking back.”
