It’s the third charting track from the duo’s upcoming album “Three,” out Oct. 7.

Electronic pop duo Phantogram is making waves this week as its new single “Cruel World” tops the Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 real-time chart, shooting to No. 1 after the duo premiered the song Wednesday (Aug. 17) on YouTube.

The Trending 140 chart measures the acceleration of conversation around artists and their music on Twitter.

In an interview with Complex, lead singer Sarah Barthel said the EDM-meets-piano song is about “how tragic life can be at times -- how the world can bring you down -- but you have to try to find the beauty in it sometimes.”

“Cruel World” is the third single from their upcoming third studio album Three, due Oct. 7. It follows the release of two other singles slated to appear on Three: “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” and “Run Run Blood.” The former jumps to No. 11 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart this week and has peaked so far at No. 24 on Hot Rock Songs.

Three will be Phantogram’s first album since 2014’s Voices, which debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart, selling 21,000 copies, according to Nielsen Music.
