iHeartMedia's Podcasts Are Coming to Radio With New Sunday Night Initiative

iHeartMedia’s podcasts are coming to the radio.

In a press release Thursday (Aug. 8), the audio company announced the premiere of Sunday Night Podcasts, a new programming initiative that will see the company’s most popular podcasts air on hundreds of iHeartMedia broadcast stations every Sunday. The initiative is part of the company’s “Podcast, Meet Broadcast” strategy, which looks to spread awareness of its podcast programming to an estimated quarter-billion broadcast listeners across 850 iHeartMedia stations in the U.S.

“We’re thrilled to bring some of the world’s best and most popular podcasts to our broadcast listeners every Sunday,” said iHeartPodcast Network president Conal Byrne in a statement. “iHeartMedia reaches 91 percent of the U.S. population with just our broadcast radio stations alone, so we’re uniquely able to provide the scale critical to introducing podcasts to the millions of Americans who aren’t yet familiar with them.”

The inaugural edition of Sunday Night Podcasts is slated to air this Sunday, Aug. 11, with season two, episode one of The Ron Burgundy Podcast, an iHeartRadio Original Podcast co-produced by iHeartMedia and Funny or Die. It will air across 270 iHeartMedia broadcast stations spanning a variety of formats including CHR, Hot AC, Country Rock, Urban and News/Talk.

Upcoming Sunday Night Podcasts will include Stuff You Should Know, Ridiculous History, Atlanta Monster, Stuff You Missed in History Class, Math & Magic: Stories from the Frontiers of Marketing, Whine Down with Jana Kramer, TechStuff, Hell and Gone, The Ben and Ashley I. Almost Famous Podcast and Happy Face.

iHeartMedia’s “Podcast, Meet Broadcast” initiative launched in October 2017 with the airing of the hit podcast Inside Psycho as a one-hour special on over 70 iHeartMedia News/Talk stations. In June 2018, the company also signed an agreement to bring the comedy-interview podcast Anna Farris is Unqualified to the iHeartPodcast Network and Top 40 broadcast stations. Additionally, it premiered episodes of Family Secrets and Monster: The Zodiac Killer exclusively on the company’s broadcast stations prior to making them available elsewhere.

iHeartMedia claims to have had proven results with the strategy thus far, including a “massive increase” in listenership for the true-crime podcast Disgraceland when it aired on more than 70 of the company’s broadcast stations in March.

iHeartMedia’s push into the rapidly-expanding podcast space includes last year’s acquisition of Stuff Media, home to popular podcasts such as HowStuffWorks and Atlanta Monster. The company has also launched such iHeartRadio Originals as Chelsea Handler: Life Will Be the Death of Me, Noble Blood and Committed and over a hundred shows featuring iHeartRadio on-air talent, including Bobbycast and The Breakfast Club
