Executive Turntable: Moves at ASCAP, Spirit Music Nashville, Smule & More

Brooke Eplee has been named ASCAP's senior vp strategy and business development. Working on both growth and competitive strategy, Eplee will handle new business development, strategic partnerships and innovation initiatives. Eplee will report to ASCAP's executive vp and chief strategy and digital officer Nicholas Lehman

"PROs are fundamental to solving some of the most challenging scale and data issues facing the music industry, and ASCAP is pushing the performing rights sector forward in so many ways," said Eplee in a press release. "I am excited to serve our member needs and help advance the music industry toward its next chapter." 

Eplee most recently served as the vp business development at VEVO, where she led a re-formulation of the company's business model, distribution and monetization strategy. Having worked in the music and digital media industries for 15 years, Eplee has also held positions at Sony Music Entertainment and Nokia.


Spirit Music Group has appointed Derek Wells to senior director of A&R/production at Spirit Music Nashville. A multi-instrumentalist and producer, his work on Maren Morris' album HERO earned him a Grammy nomination. Wells will report to the CEO of Spirit Music Nashville, Frank Rogers. Spirit Music Group has also established a joint venture with Wells for his 2 Mix Music Company.

"Derek Wells is one of the most talented people in music – period. His resume as a musician and producer speaks for itself, but that is just scratching the surface,” said Rogers. “He is a magnet for great people and great music. I speak for the entire Spirit Music Nashville family in saying we are thrilled to partner with Derek in this next phase of his career." 

Wells currently also serves on the Country Music Association's board of directors as well as on committees for the Academy of Country Music and The Grammys.


Big Deal Music Group has named Jamie Cerreta and Casey Robinson co-presidents and promoted Kenny MacPhearson to CEO. All three executives will remain at the company's Los Angeles headquarters. Big Deal Music Group was founded in 2012 by MacPhearson and Cerrata with Dave Ayers, who all used to work together at Chrysalis.

"Jamie and Casey have made critical contributions to establishing Big Deal," said MacPherson, "and it’s clear to us that they’re not only vital to our continued growth, but to the future of the industry generally. These promotions recognize their achievements, as well as the faith that Dave and I have in them as forward-thinking executives."

Cerreta began his career in major label A&R. During his time at Big Deal, he has signed artists such as My Morning JacketLocal Natives and Weyes Blood

Robison left BMI to join Big Deal Music in 2012. As head of its pop/songwriting division, he signed Teddy Geiger (Shawn Mendes) and One Direction songwriter-producers John Ryan and Julian Bunetta, among others. Robison was promoted to partner in 2015.


Smule has appointed musician and veteran tech CMO Reid Genauer to lead the company's marketing team and go-to-market strategy, which focuses on delivering a first-person social music experience. 

Most recently, Genauer was CMO of Magisto, an AI-fueled video creation platform. He was formerly the vp Marketing at Fox Mobile Group and eMusic
