The song soared in at No. 1 on the Jan. 23-dated all-genre, airplay-, sales- and streaming-based Billboard Hot 100, where it ruled for eight weeks. It has also topped Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales and both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts, leading the latter two lists for eight and nine weeks, respectively, the longest reigns since the surveys launched last September.
Reaching the Adult Pop Airplay summit in its 10th week, "License" hits No. 1 more quickly than any other female artist's first entry as a lead act since Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" (eight weeks, 2008).
Among acts' first Radio Songs entries in lead roles, "License" wrapped the fastest run to No. 1 (eight weeks) since Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" (seven, 2014). On Pop Airplay, it completed the quickest coronation (seven weeks) for lead female in a first chart visit since Blu Cantrell's "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" (also seven, 2001).
"It's wonderful when you have the opportunity to go to radio with a song that has passion from millions of people," Interscope Geffen A&M president of promotion Brenda Romano recently told Billboard. "Radio loved the song and wanted to jump in and be a part of Olivia's story from the beginning, and they are, in a very big way."
