He becomes just second artist to top the chart without an accompanied act in 2020.
Maluma secures his second No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart (dated Sept. 12) -- and his first as a lead act -- as “Hawai” jumps 2-1. Maluma last reigned on Hot Latin Songs through his featured role on Shakira’s “Chantaje,” an 11-week ruler starting with the chart dated Nov. 10, 2016. “Hawai” becomes his first leader without an accompanied act.
“Hawai” was produced by Medellín duo The Rude Boyz, who also produced Papi Juancho, Maluma’s fifth studio album, which debuted at No. 2 on Top Latin Albums (Sept. 5-dated list).
The Hot Latin Songs chart blends airplay, digital sales and streaming data. “Hawai” advances to the top mainly on the strength of streaming activity. The song earned 9.4 million U.S. clicks (up 30 percent) in the week ending Sept. 3, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data; four days following his performance of the song at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 30.
