John Prine Hits No. 1 on Rock Songwriters Chart After His Death Due to Coronavirus

The legendary singer-songwriter died April 7.

John Prine debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Rock Songwriters chart (dated April 18), leading for the first time thanks to six entries, which he solely wrote, on the latest Hot Rock Songs chart.

The iconic singer-songwriter died April 7 at age 73 from complications of COVID-19.

Prine's 1999 duet with Iris DeMent, "In Spite of Ourselves," leads his Hot Rock Songs haul at No. 5, driven by 1.3 million U.S. streams and 6,000 downloads sold in the week ending April 9, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

Two versions of Prine's 1971 classic "Angel From Montgomery" grace Hot Rock Songs: his original recording debuts at No. 11, and his duet take with Bonnie Raitt arrives at No. 20.

Prine also lands a pair of albums on the all-format Billboard 200. His self-titled 1971 debut re-enters at No. 55 with 12,000 equivalent album units earned (up 434%), besting its original No. 154 high achieved in its year of release. His final album before his death, 2018's The Tree of Forgiveness, also re-enters, at No. 109 (8,000 units, up 444%); it debuted and peaked at No. 5 in 2018, becoming his first top five, or even top 25, entry.

The sets concurrently rank at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively, on the Americana/Folk Albums chart.
