The 2018 MTV Video Music Awards yielded significant sales gains for the songs performed on the Aug. 20 broadcast, according to Nielsen Music. In the week ending Aug. 23, the collected tunes performed on the show — excluding recently released tracks — earned a 41 percent sales gain in download sales in the U.S., rising to 112,000 sold (up from 79,000 in the frame ending Aug. 16).
Among the notable gainers: Shawn Mendes’ “In My Blood,” which was the first performance of the evening. The track nabbed a 66 percent gain, rising to 8,000 downloads sold (up from 5,000 the week previous). Logic’s “One Day,” featuring Ryan Tedder, also posted a significant increase. It grew 251 percent to 3,000 (up from 1,000).
Jennifer Lopez also was a big winner, courtesy of her 10-minute medley of hits. The recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award (as well as best collaboration for “Dinero,” featuring DJ Khaled and Cardi B) treated the audience to a lavish 12-song performance. The dozen tunes collectively earned a 150 percent sales increase (rising to 13,000 sold – up from 5,000).
