The song completes a more than six-month journey to No. 1.

James Arthur crowns Billboard's Adult Pop Songs radio airplay chart, as "Say You Won't Let Go" climbs 2-1 in its 28th week on the list (dated June 3). His breakthrough hit (released on Columbia Records) crowns the ranking with a 7 percent gain in plays in the week ending May 21, according to Nielsen Music.

The song ties for the fifth-steadiest ascent to No. 1 in the chart's 21-year history. The Script set the mark when "Breakeven" earned the top spot at last in its 36th frame (May 29, 2010).

Arthur is the first act to lead Adult Pop Songs with a first entry on the ranking since DNCE, whose "Cake by the Ocean" reached No. 1 on June 4, 2016. He's the first solo male to reign on a first try since Shawn Mendes, who sent "Stitches" to No. 1 on the chart dated Feb. 6, 2016.

Columbia executive vp of promotion Lee Leipsner told Billboard on last week's Chart Beat Podcast (May 18) that the lyrics to Arthur's song have proven key to its appeal. "The one line that [women listeners] all like is, 'I held your hair back while you were throwing up.' It's relatable," he says. "What says [love] more than holding your hair while throwing up? It's pretty romantic."

All charts will update tomorrow, May 23, on Billboard.com.
