Blink-182 Achieves Its Highest Alternative Songs Debut Ever With 'Bored to Death'

If you're going to come back almost five years after your last album, you'd better do it big. Luckily, Blink-182 seem poised to do just that.

"Bored to Death," the new single from the venerable alt-rockers, bounds in at No. 15 on Billboard's Rock Airplay chart with 4.6 million in airplay audience, according to Nielsen Music, and No. 18 on both the Alternative Songs airplay chart and the airplay/sales/streaming-based Hot Rock Songs ranking.

The track is the trio's first since guitarist/singer Tom DeLonge was replaced by Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba in early 2015.

All three chart positions mark the highest debuts on each tally in the band's two-decade career. On Alternative Songs (the only chart of the three that predates Blink-182's first album, Cheshire Cat, in 1995), the No. 18 opening of "Bored" bests the band's previous top entrances of No. 25 logged by "First Date" in 2002 and "Up All Night" in 2011. (Those songs went on to peak at Nos. 6 and 3, respectively.)

The new song's hot start also marks the highest debut on both Alternative Songs and Rock Airplay in 2016. Previously, this year's best bows belonged to KONGOS, whose "Take It From Me" began at No. 24 on Alternative Songs (May 7), and twenty one pilots, whose "Ride" represented the year's highest debut on Rock Airplay (No. 30, Jan. 30).

The last time a song debuted as high as "Bored" on Alternative Songs? Beck's "Dreams," at No. 13 on July 4, 2015.

Notably, "Dreams" first received airplay on June 14, 2015, a Sunday, while "Bored" arrived April 27, a Wednesday. As the radio chart tracking week runs Monday through Sunday, the former track, thus, debuted with a full seven days of airplay (June 15-21), while the latter enters with less than four full days. Analyzing more deeply, it may now be harder for songs to debut as high on airplay charts as before July 10, 2015, when the new Friday global release date for albums and singles took effect. Previously, new songs often premiered on Mondays (and albums on Tuesdays), thus ensuring a full first week of play for songs on airplay charts (again, as airplay chart tracking covers Monday-Sunday); now, songs and albums often premiere on Fridays, which keeps them from logging a full first week of spins on airplay charts. The tradeoff is that they can accumulate a full seven days of sales and streaming, as sales and streaming charts run Monday-Sunday.

Speaking of sales, "Bored" also debuts at Nos. 10 and 15 on Alternative Digital Songs and Rock Digital Songs, respectively, with 12,000 downloads sold.

California, Blink-182's seventh studio album and first without DeLonge, is due July 1. DeLonge, meanwhile, continues to perform with his other band, Angels & Airwaves.
