SoundExchange announced on Thursday it has promoted longtime general counsel Colin Rushing to the role of chief legal officer. Based in Nashville, Rushing will now lead the rights management agency's business development strategy in addition to overseeing all legal, regulatory and enforcement initiatives.

"Colin is one of the music industry's leading minds whose knowledge and dedication to fair payment has improved the livelihood of all music creators," said SoundExchange president and CEO Michael Huppe. "I look forward to Colin serving in this new role and creating new opportunities for our organization and the overall music community."

Rushing, a regular fixture on Billboard's annual list of top music lawyers, joined SoundExchange in 2008 as senior counsel before rising through the ranks to general counsel in 2011. For the past six years he has held the title of senior vp and general counsel, during which time he helped secure a massive settlement with SiriusXM and a 40%-plus bump in satellite radio rates.

Added Rushing, "SoundExchange is committed to maximizing the value of music, and to empowering music creators to thrive in a constantly shifting environment. I'm proud to be a part of this team and excited to advance SoundExchange's mission."
