Spotify UK's Head Of Editorial Austin Daboh Exits Company
After less than a year in the role, Austin Daboh has stepped down as head of music culture and editorial at Spotify U.K.
His exit was first reported by Music Business Worldwide and confirmed to Billboard by Spotify, which declined to comment further.
London-based Daboh joined the streaming company in 2016 from BBC Radio 1Xtra. He was promoted to head of head of editorial in July last year, following in the footsteps of George Ergatoudis, who also cut his teeth at BBC, and left Spotify a month prior for a bigger role at Apple Music.
During his time at Spotify, Daboh helped establish the platform as a key player in the thriving British hip-hop, grime and R&B scenes via popular playlists like Who We Be, which successfully transitioned into a touring live show in 2017. Last year's show at London's 10,000-capacity Alexandra Palace was headlined by French Montana, AJ Tracey and Craig David.
The exec's remit at Spotify also included overall curation of leading British playlists Hot Hits UK, New Music Friday, Rap UK and All New All Now, among others.
Daboh is yet to announce his next move, although Apple Music's recent job advert for a new head of editorial, UK and Ireland could provide a strong hint where he might end up.
His departure from Spotify comes just a few weeks after it was announced that global head of publishing Adam Parness was also exiting the company, which (along with Google, Pandora and Amazon) recently appealed against the Copyright Royalty Board's decision to boost U.S. streaming royalties for songwriters and music publishers by 44 percent.
That led to dozens of songwriters penning an open letter to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek demanding that the streaming firm reconsider. Nile Rodgers, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Greg Kurstin, Teddy Geiger, Ed Drewett and Steve Mac were among the signatories.
The National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA), Nashville Songwriters Association and Songwriters of North America (SONA) have also criticized the appeal.
