Warner Music Canada will market, promote and distribute new Los Angeles indie label Anti-Gravity Records, co-founded by Canadian transplant Justin Gray and partner Brad Aarons, Warner announced on Monday (May 6). The first release is from American R&B artist Romell, who will debut this week at Toronto’s Canadian Music Week.

Based in L.A., Gray is a producer and songwriter who has worked with a range of artists including Amy Winehouse, John Legend, Luis Fonsi and Mariah Carey. He co-wrote Avril Lavigne’s “Head Above Water,” which was No. 1 on iTunes in February.  Aarons is a long-time and well-rounded music industry veteran starting as an executive in A&R (Epic Records/ Sony International), then publishing (Warner Chappell, Universal). He is currently an artist manager in a joint venture with Roc Nation.

“I have long admired Justin as a songwriter, producer and spotter of talent,” Warner Music Canada president Steve Kane said in a statement.  “With Brad’s vast years of experience in the music industry, I think that they make a dynamic duo who will bring incredible music to the landscape and we’re excited to have the opportunity to work with them on this venture.”

Said Gray, “Having worked with Steve and the rest of the exceptional team at Warner for many years, I have watched them truly support and nurture their artists. We are so excited to have them be a part of our journey.”

Added Aarons, also in a statement, “It’s with great pride we get to build our creative vision and support our artists alongside such a storied team of executives.”

Romell, who was born in Milwaukee but is based in L.A., dropped his debut single, “Die Alone,” back in March. According to the release, that first week he “commanded seven playlists and early spins on V100 (Milwaukee’s R&B station/ I Heart Radio) & Milwaukee’s 103.7 KISS (Pop/ Entravision).” His song “Pray For A Miracle” is also in the end credits of the biopic Brian Banks, directed by Tom Shaydac and starring Greg Kinnear and Aldis Hodge, set for release in August on Bleeker Street.
