Juno Week 2019: 42 Canadian Music Industry Groups Sign Canadian Creative Industries Code of Conduct
On Saturday (March 16), it was announced that 42 Canadian music industry groups, many of them associations, have signed the Canadian Creative Industries Code of Conduct. The news broke during the Allies In Action event held at Museum London during Juno Week in London, Ontario.
Any music business, organization or association, big or small, can become a signatory at www.readthecode.ca, though the code is not legally enforceable.
“On November 23, 2017, a coalition of Canadian creative industry stakeholders released a statement committing to zero tolerance for harassment, discrimination, bullying and violence and established working groups to explore the development of a Code of Conduct, safer reporting measures and industry-wide education and training,” it states on the website.
“This Code of Conduct is only the first step in achieving these goals. Working together, we have attempted to be broad in application, inclusive and specific in addressing concerns raised by the brave people who came forward with their experiences of harassment of all kinds.”
Unison Benevolent Fund, which offers free emergency financial and counseling services to qualifying individuals from the Canadian music industry, also announced training and education resources for the Code of Condust signatories, as established by the Education, Training, and Safe Support Committee.
The ETSS Committee -- created by some members of the coalition -- aims to “provide each member of the Canadian music community with the appropriate resources and training to identify, confront and prevent harassment, bullying and violence in any workplace.” Unison will host these resources through its website at no cost.
Other organizations, and even one-person operations, interested in signing the Code can register online. Once the form has been completed, new signatories should email a high resolution company logo to email@example.com with the organization’s name and “Becoming Code signatory” in the subject line.
