JAY-Z Will Present Jon Platt With City of Hope's Spirit of Life Award
JAY-Z will do the honors of presenting Jon Platt, chairman and CEO of Warner/Chappell Music, with the Spirit of Life award at next month's City of Hope gala, it was announced on Tuesday. The award is City of Hope’s highest honor, presented each year to a philanthropic leader whose work fundamentally impacted music, film or entertainment.
The gesture arrives a year after Platt represented JAY-Z at his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a first for a rapper. At the City of Hope Gala, taking place Oct. 11 in L.A. and hosted by Pharrell Williams, the 21-time Grammy Award-winning rapper will have just wrapped his On the Run II Tour with Beyoncé, which launched alongside their joint album, Everything is Love.
"It’s no secret that I don’t like being the center of attention, that’s for the songwriters, but when I accept the Spirit of Life award this fall, I can't think of anyone else I’d rather have presenting it to me," said Platt. "Jay is unquestionably one of the most giving and genuine people I know, not to mention one of the greatest songwriters on the planet. I feel lucky to call him my brother. October 11 is going to be a really special, unforgettable night."
Platt currently sits on the boards of the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, the Motown Museum and the Living Legends Foundation. He also actively supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, where his wife sits on the board of directors. In the past, Platt has served as the vice chairman of the board of directors for the MusiCares Foundation. Since 2005, Platt has also been awarding three high school students from his hometown with college scholarships through his Big Jon Platt Scholarship Program.
Previous recipients of the Spirit of Life award include Quincy Jones, Mo Ostin, Clive Davis, Frances W. Preston, Shelli and Irving Azoff, Doug Morris, and Sir Lucian Grainge.
