Leonard Cohen, Robert Charlebois Honored at SOCAN's Quebec-centric Awards

Canadian performing rights organization SOCAN (The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) held its Quebec-focused awards gala in Montreal last night at La TOHU, doling out almost 50 awards to songwriters, screen composers and music publishers, including Leonard Cohen and Robert Charlebois.

Awards included francophone and anglophone. All the special achievement honorees received a custom trophy by Canadian company Sabian that doublesas as a playable percussion instrument: five crotales tuned to play the first notes of Charlebois’ 1976 composition "Je reviendrai à Montréal," a nod to this year’s 375th anniversary of Montréal.

"Québec's musical ecosystem is moving to a new era, and SOCAN is proactive on all fronts, working closely with organizations of every size to ensure that music creators and publishers are compensated fairly in this new environment," said SOCAN CEO Eric Baptiste in a statement. "Tonight, we celebrate the very reason why we do everything we do for our members: their creativity, their emotion, their sweat, their intelligence, and their art."

The private 28th annual Montréal SOCAN Awards Gala  -- the English-focused SOCAN Awards were held in Toronto back in June -- for 400 attendees was hosted by musician/actor Stéphane Archambault.

For the first time in the gala's history, two special achievement awards were presented to one person: Charlebois, who received the SOCAN Lifetime Achievement Award; and the SOCAN Cultural Impact Award, alongside his collaborator Claude Péloquin, for their song "Lindberg."

The SOCAN Global Inspiration Award was awarded posthumously to Cohen, while Beyries, Vincent Vallières, and Matiu performed a trilingual – French, English and Innu – rendition of his song "Everybody Knows."

The SOCAN Publisher of the Year award was given to Éditorial Avenue and the company's founder, Daniel Lafrance, "saluting his leadership and massive contributions to the music community."

Eleven new songs were inducted as SOCAN Classics and 10 Francophone Pop Music Awards were handed out to the songwriters and music publishers of the most played songs in Québec in 2016.

The SOCAN Licensed To Play Award was presented to ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur. "The Quebec ministry of education was recognized for its ongoing commitment to ensuring that legal and ethical music licensing obligations are being met through its constituents across the province," the SOCAN release explains.
