Karoondinha Tickets Will Be Honored by Deep Roots Mountain Revival Festival
The Deep Roots Mountain Revival festival in Masontown, West Virginia, announced Wednesday (June 28) it will honor all tickets sold for Pennsylvania’s Karoondinha Music & Arts Festival, which was canceled Tuesday due to poor advance ticket sales and ballooning costs.
“[We] realize that it’s the ticket holders who are the ones that suffer,” Deep Roots founder Claude Ryan said in a statement posted on social media. “We never want to see another event fail, or watch the fans of the festival scene feel as though they received the short end of the stick. In an effort to shine a positive light back into a scene that is near and dear to our hearts, we will be honoring all Karoondinha weekend and single-day passes at this year’s Deep Roots Mountain Revival."
While Ryan's gesture is certainly magnanimous, it’s not exactly a one-for-one trade in terms of performers. Karoondinha’s headliners included such nationally prominent acts as Chance the Rapper, The Roots, John Legend, Odesza and Porter Robinson, while Deep Roots is featuring the lesser-known Brandi Carlile, Dr. Dog, Lettuce, JJ Grey & Morfro, Moon Taxi, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band and White Denim, among others (full lineup below). It’s also a three-hour drive south from Karoondinha's Centre Hall, Pennsylvania, venue to Deep Roots' locale at Marvin’s Mountaintop -- though the fests were coincidentally set for the same July 20-22 weekend.
The Karoondinha news comes after a number of high-profile festival cancellations, including Fyre Festival, which had to be shut down after the first day when attendees arrived at a woefully disorganized site. Last month, Pemberton festival in British Columbia declared bankruptcy, instructing fans who wanted a refund to apply as unsecured creditors.
According to investor documents obtained by Billboard, Karoondinha organizers forecasted ticket sales between 25,000 to 30,000 fans but had prepared themselves for a sell-out capacity of 70,000, generating $26 million in revenue.
Deep Roots has said all three-day and four-day Karoondinha ticket-holders will be able to exchange their passes for three-day general admission passes at the gate. Single-day pass holders can also exchange for any of Deep Roots Mountain Revival’s general admission one-day passes.
