Universal Music Publishing Group has appointed Walter Jones as its new VP of creative. The announcement was made by David Gray, UMPG EVP/head of West Coast A&R to whom Jones will report. The new UMPG exec, who formerly worked at Sony/ATV as vp of Urban A&R, will relocate to Los Angeles where he joins UMPG’s global A&R team.

“I’m a big Walter Jones fan, said UMPG chaiman/ceo Jody Gerson in a statement. "I love his passion for music and his deep relationships with the artist community. I am supportive of his growth as an executive and can’t wait to see what he achieves with us at UMPG."
Jones' signings have included Alessia Cara, G-Eazy, ASAP Rocky, Kid Ink, OT Genesis, MadeinTYO, ASAP Ferg, Pusha T and DJ Marley Waters, co producer of Tinashe’s hit song “2 On.” Jones has also worked closely with hitmakers DJ Camper (Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, John Legend), and August Rigo (Justin Bieber, One Direction, Chris Brown). In addition, he executive produced artist H.E.R.’s debut EP, Volume 1 (MBK/RCA).

"As an experienced A&R executive who’s well-known for his great ears and ability to spot and nurture writers," Grey stated, "Walter Jones is going to be a fantastic addition to our global team. I’m really pleased he’s joined the company."

Jones also put together writing sessions that generated hit singles such as Usher’s “Climax” (Elijah Blake) and “Let Me See” (Eric Bellinger/Lundon Knighten), and Chris Brown's "Back to Sleep” (August Rigo). He also paired up hitmaking team Tiyon "TC" Mack and Tamar Braxton, as well as orchestrated Pusha T and DJ Yogi’s collaboration “Burial,” which has generated over $1 million in sync revenue. Prior to Sony/ATV, Jones  was an international DJ and director of membership (Rhythm & Soul) at ASCAP.

"I am excited to join UMPG’s incredible team and inspired by their commitment to the roster and fostering of new talent," Jones stated. "I look forward to this exciting new chapter, and thank Jody Gerson, Evan Lamberg and David Gray for giving me the opportunity to contribute to the company’s growth, innovation, and success,”

Last week UMPG appointed Rochelle Holguin to the position of VP of creative strategy. Reporting to Gerson, Holguin will work closely with UMPG's sync and A&R teams, as well as UMG’s film/TV development group, to create  partnerships and promotional opportunities with streaming services, TV/film studios, digital, social and other emerging platforms. Additionally she will work directly with managers and writers to support their creative ambitions.

“We are focused on building the best creative music publishing company in the world, and I’m really excited to have Rochelle on board. Her broad experience and great relationships will help facilitate new opportunities for our writers, provide extra support to our studio partners, and expand marketing initiatives,” Gerson stated.

Holguin joins UMPG from Viacom, where she was vp and head of creative music services and was responsible for music supervision and the creative production music strategy across MTV, VH1 and LogoTV’s linear and digital programs, promos, trailers and specials.  Holguin also developed and executed significant music supervision marketing initiatives across TV, digital and social platforms, for primetime series including Teen Wolf, Awkward, Faking It, The Real World, Teen Mom, Jersey Shore and The Hills among others. Prior to joining MTV, she was a music coordinator at Hit The Ground Running. She is also on the advisory board for the Women In Music organization.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work for Jody," Holguin stated. "She is an extraordinary role model for women in the music business and I look forward to forging new ground under her leadership.  I’m thrilled to join the UMPG team and excited about developing innovative and creative connections and avenues for our roster of talented artists and songwriters,”
