In 2016, the RIAA united creators around the "value gap" -- the idea that the "safe harbors" of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act help services like YouTube pay less for music than their competitors. Meanwhile, the NMPA reached a $30 million landmark settlement with Spotify over mechanical royalties owed on songs that the service couldn't identify. Israelite, who already is negotiating with Spotify's rivals over the same issue, promises it is "the first of many to follow."
