Steven Victor Named SVP A&R at Universal Music
The rising rap and hip hop entrepreneur will now work in all genres, signing new artists and shepherding talent across all of UMG’s labels, which include Interscope-Geffen-A&M, Capitol Music Group, Republic Records, Def Jam Recordings, The Verve Label Group, MCA Nashville and others. UMG's stable of artists include Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Chris Stapleton, among others.
Victor, 36, will continue to run G.O.O.D. Music, which was founded by West in 2004 and began a distribution partnership with Def Jam in 2015. He will also continue running his William Victor Management group. His new role includes seeking opportunities in film, television, branding and publishing for UMG artists
"My ears are open, my heart is open, the doors are wide open," Victor said of the new opportunity. "And if [artists] have a great idea, we’ll help them actualize it."
Victor, a graduate of Moorehouse College, began his music career in 2003, working for six years in public relations at Interscope-Geffen-A&M, handling artists such as Jadakiss and Nelly Furtado. He also worked closely with hip hop duo Clipse, which included Pusha-T, who is now president of G.O.O.D. Music.
New York-based Victor, who signed Desiigner to G.O.O.D. and helped his platinum hit "Panda" become the most on-demand streamed song so far this year with 674.4 million streams, says he selects new talent on "gut instinct." The track reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in May.
Victor reports directly to UMG chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge.
