Erik Huggers attends a conference on Mobile Entertainment and Lifestyle: The Future of Media on Mobile at the 2010 Mobile World Congress on Feb. 17, 2010 in Barcelona, Spain.

Vevo CEO Erik Huggers did more than reveal plans for a paid subscription tier during last week's Code/Media 2016 conference, he also expanded on business strategies and tried to clear up confusion about what Vevo even is. Huggers said he wanted to be the "specialty store" to YouTube's "supermarket," adding that Vevo can offer a better experience than what he described as a "lowest common denominator for all type of content out there."

"If we're really honest and look in the mirror, we can say 'gosh, we're a watermark on a third-party player [YouTube],'" he said. “But it's a watermark that's very meaningful and has values such as 'official' and 'quality.' People search for it and say 'that's the official version.' Most brands would give a left arm and a right leg for those sorts of values to be attributed to their brand. We think that the opportunity is there to create something that is a youth lifestyle entertainment brand."
