Rdio Unveils 'Bargain Priced' Tier

Subscribers are allowed to download a set number of songs per day, and switch them out.

So you're not keen on spending ten bucks every month for streaming music? How about $3.99 then? Rdio has unveiled a new subscription tier called Rdio Select that offers unlimited ad-free streaming radio -- that is, no on-demand listening -- and the ability to download 25 new songs every day, on-demand.

The radio component of Rdio Select is pretty standard, with high-quality sound and unlimited skips, etc., but the song downloads feature is unique in that subscribers can only keep 25 new song downloads in their libraries at any given time. Each day, users will be able to select 25 new songs, with the old ones being pushed out to make room. Subscribers can listen to their libraries offline, plus Rdio will curate numerous 10-song playlists via artists and influencers which will give listeners an easy way to select new tracks for their libraries.

If listeners really wanted to embrace the full potential of Rdio Select and discover 25 new songs every day, that would amount to 9,125 tracks over a year for about $48. Make that 9,150 songs to account for Leap Day next February.

Rdio CEO Anthony Bay said the Select tier should appeal to "price-sensitive" music fans who want more than just ad-supported radio. "We remain committed to offering customized streaming options tuned to different listening audiences that includes the free listening experience," he said. "We believe in a free tier that is fair to artists, labels, and consumers alike."

The San Francisco-based service boasts 35 million songs and is available in over 85 countries and territories.
