Damon Albarn Postpones Sydney Opera House Show As CBD Siege Continues

Damon Albarn’s scheduled Monday night performance at the Sydney Opera House has been postponed as a dramatic siege situation brought areas of the city center to a standstill.

The iconic entertainment venue had reportedly been evacuated at about 10am local time following reports of a suspicious package being discovered on site. The lockdown at the Opera House coincided with a dramatic scenario at the Lindt Cafe in central Sydney's Martin Place, where an armed man had taken a number of hostages, some of whom emerged later in the day.

The Opera House's social media team announced via its Facebook page and Twitter feed that performances for the evening would be canceled "in light of the situation in the CBD today." Albarn retweeted the message. The slated Monday night performances of The Australian Ballet’s The Nutcracker and the Sydney Theatre Company’s Switzerland have also been canceled.

The British singer, who co-founded Blur and Gorillaz, has agreed to double-up his Tuesday schedule. He'll perform the rescheduled show at the Opera House's Concert Hall fro 7pm on Tuesday, and the other at 9:30pm as expected.

A spokeswoman for the Sydney Opera House reportedly denied the existence of a suspicious package but reps for the venue could not be reached for comment.

John Legend and Roxette are among the big-name international artists booked to play the famous venue in the weeks and months ahead.
