Chris Murphy has promoted music biz veteran Paul Paoliello to international CEO/COO of the Murphy Petrol Group, with immediate effect.

The South African-born Paoliello until recently served as director of business development for the Australian entrepreneur's rights management firm Murphy Rights Management (MRM).

Sydney-based Paoliello’s resume includes stints as managing director of the Zomba/Jive Asia Pacific regional operation and as marketing manager of international repertoire and A&R manager international labels for BMG Records Africa. Over the past seven years he’s explored the digital world in such roles as COO of Mercury Mobility and as group chief sales and marketing officer with Mnet.

Paoliello's promotion could start a blast of activity from Murphy's businesses. "Paul’s immense experience, along with his extraordinary talent will be a game changer for music label Petrol Records, the music publishing business Murphy Rights Management and the soon to be launched Murphy Music Academy,” Murphy says in a statement.

Stuart Watson, founder of SWAT Enterprises and former managing director of The Zomba International Record Group, reckons Murphy has got his man. “Paul was one of the early recruits to the SWAT / Zomba team, and with the three years of knowledge and contacts he gained as Singapore based chief of Jive/Zomba Asia Pacific, he very quickly rose to GM then MD of Jive / Zomba Australia where he drove both Sydney and Melbourne based operations. He has tireless energy, and his knowledge of both European and American markets make him ideally suited to this new role,” he says in a statement. “The fact that CM has identified his supreme talent is no surprise to me. He will not be disappointed.’’

On his new gig, Paoliello tells Billboard he’s “extremely excited to be back in the new music business and to join Chris and his groundbreaking new companies is a real honor.”

INXS Creates Australian Chart History

Paoliello’s elevation at the Murphy Petrol Group comes at a time when the Petrol Records label boasts the highest-selling artist album of 2014 in Australia with INXSThe Very Best. Just last week, the band was honored with the GQ “Legends of the Year” accolade at the GQ Men of the Year Awards Down Under.

In other Murphy Petrol Group news, Rebecca Moore joins in the role of creative and marketing executive, Melissa Barrett of Hummingbird PR comes on board to drive synchronisation opportunities as creative consultant and specific media campaigns for Murphy Rights Management, while long-time consultant and confidante to Murphy, Samantha Evans, will become international development executive. Evans will continue to oversee the group’s international licensing activities.
