'Hunger Games' Star Jena Malone Moonlights With Her Band The Shoe

"It makes my heart explode"

Jena Malone might be best known for her roles in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Stepmom and Donnie Darko, but the 29-year-old actress has another passion: the antique folk she makes with multi-instrumentalist Lem Jay Ignacio as The Shoe. Malone, like her friend Zooey Deschanel, is one of those rare Hollywood stars who can move from blockbuster to busker. She recently finished a tour supporting the duo's debut LP, "I'm Okay," and production for parts one and two of Mockingjay, the final installments of the Hunger Games franchise.

After several years of performing solo as The Shoe, she connected with Ignacio at a Christmas party when the two freestyled a 10-minute "Winter Wonderland" with "mythical Portuguese" lyrics.

Such improvisational live shows often incorporate letters or quotes from Malone's devoted fans. "Getting to be with them in such a personal way, it makes my heart explode," she says.
