Backstage Pass: Midyear Touring Report - Smaller Halls, But Bigger Stars

New York's Radio City Music Hall and the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas rank No. 1 on the Billboard Boxscore midyear charts for venues, respectively, between 5,001 and 10,000 capacity and those of 5,000 or less. Radio City's numbers get a boost from the annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular. "What other live holiday production has camels, sheep and a donkey that never miss a cue and are always given a standing ovation?" asks Bob Shea, MSG Entertainment executive vp bookings. "From the dazzling costumes to the innovative Rockettes choreography and state-of-the-art technology, the Christmas spectacular is a cornerstone production." The Colosseum hosted residencies by Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Jerry Seinfeld. "Our artists are here so frequently, they're like family," says John Nelson, vp at AEG Live Las Vegas. "Where else could you go to work and have a pizza party with Shania Twain after work?"
