Backstage Pass: Midyear Touring Report - Stars Vie With Hockey in Zurich

Despite balancing dates for professional hockey playoffs with sold-out concerts, the Hallenstadion in Zurich leads the midyear Billboard Boxscore chart for venues with capacities between 10,001 and 15,000. "This was a period with narrow time frames because our home-based ice hockey team, the ZSC Lions, won the national championship after a long series of playoff matches, so we often needed the flexibility of the promoters, production teams and staff," says Hallenstadion director/CEO Felix Frei. Justin Timberlake, Robbie Williams, Depeche Mode, Michael Buble and Kings of Leon helped the 14,000-seat arena top the chart with grosses exceeding $42 million. "A highlight was the appearance of Ennio Morricone [on Feb. 13], when the maestro conducted a 160-member orchestra in a fantastic sold-out concert," says Frei.
