Rough Trade to Open New Retail Store in Nottingham

British music retailer Rough Trade will open its first U.K. store based outside of London this fall.

The new outlet will be based in the city of Nottingham and follows Rough Trade Retail Group's acquisition of a majority stake in fellow U.K. independent music chain Rise Music.

At present, Rough Trade operates two brick-and-mortar outlets in London: Rough Trade East and Rough Trade West. Last year, the company opened its flagship New York store in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. The 15,000 square foot re-purposed film prop warehouse is based on the same model as Rough Trade’s popular and profitable London outlets, selling a large stock of CD, vinyl and music product as well as a dedicated performance area, exhibition space and cafe.

The new U.K. premises, called Rough Trade Nottingham, will follow a similar design template and forms the first stage in the company’s plans to grow its U.K. high-street presence with several more store openings planned in the near future.

In line with Rough Trade acquiring a controlling stake in Rise, the company's managing director Lawrence Montgomery has been appointed to manage Rough Trade’s regional U.K. store operations. Rise Music was formed in 2007 and currently operates three independent music shops in the U.K., based in Bristol, Cheltenham and Worcester.

“Lawrence is a tremendously exciting addition to the Rough Trade team. He gives us valuable regional U.K. perspective and an abundance of energy at precisely the right moment” added Rough Trade co-owner/director, Stephen Godfroy, who called Rough Trade's record stores “cultural hotspots, particularly for younger, format-savvy generations, who are as likely to play vinyl records to a room full of friends, as they are to listen a track on their phone.”

“City center retail is often overshadowed by the bar and restaurant sector in terms of providing places of communal vibrancy, so we hope to liven things up a little by giving innovative artists and independent thinkers a place to unite, creating places that aren’t afraid to experiment and rattle expectations,” Godfrey went on to state.

Founded by Geoff Travis in 1976, Rough Trade began as West London record shop before launching record label, distribution and management divisions. The retail business and label separated in 1982 with Rough Trade West opening August 1983. The far larger Rough Trade East opened in 2007. The company also operates a series of pop-up festival stores at U.K. and European festivals, including London’s Field Day, France’s Pitchfork Music Festival Paris and Spain’s Primavera.
