Price, who won the Oscar for his score to "Gravity," received the Composers Choice Award for film, an honor voted on by more than 500 of his peers. Porter ("Breaking Bad," "The Blacklist") and McCreary (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “The Walking Dead") tied for the TV award.

While stating that he would be self-serving, Porter thanked the composers by saying "we need this [type of award] in our community and to respect our own, especially especially with the way the environment is at this time."

Price, who accepted via a taped video piece from London where he is working on a film, offered a thank you to the community of composers, singling out ASCAP's Jeff Jernigan for being the organization's first person to welcome him. McCreary said he was "moved very deeply" by the award.

Wendy & Lisa, the former members of Prince's Revolution who have worked in film and television for decades, expressed appreciation for the Shirley Walker Award, a new award created to honor diversity in the field.

"We never see ourselves as female composers. We are composers," Melvoin said. "We had a difficult enough time trying to convince [filmmakers] coming from the rock 'n' roll world that we are dead serious about what we do. We are grateful every day about being accepted in this community."

Awards were given to composers of the top box office film music, the most performed television music and the top video game music of 2013.
