Drowning In Music: Whyd's Music Bookmarking App Hopes to Be Your Lifeboat


With the massive volume of music created and shared today, discovering a new song isn’t a problem -- remembering it is. Lucky for us, potentially, that music bookmarking service Whyd has released a free mobile app today to help listeners do just that.


After launching in private beta in November of 2012, the French startup first opened to the public in January of this year, concurrently announcing a $700,000 seed round of funding primarily from private French investors. "Now that music is available from various streaming platforms, it is ready for the same type of network disruption that Pinterest brought to images, or Foursquare to places,” says Giles Poupardin, who co-founded the service with Jie Meng-Gerard.

Whyd is like a music-only version of article bookmarking services like Pocket and Instapaper. Users can easily install an “Add Track” button to a desktop browser’s bookmark bar that detects audio and lets users save tracks from Youtube, Soundcloud, Vimeo, various MP3 Blogs and sites with audio like Bandcamp or Pitchfork, and (internationally and desktop-only) Deezer. Among other its uses, the service acts as a great way to collect a lot of tracks you won't find on services like Spotify and Beats -- like remixes and live performances. But, according to Poupardin, Whyd is also working on integrating popular streaming services.

As well, on the new mobile app, users can add tracks via the search function or from another user’s feed. The app displays a feed of songs from the users you follow, as well as eclectic feeds of “Hot Tracks,” filtered by genre. Whyd uses an internal recommendation algorithm to match users with similar taste in music, displaying a compatibility meter similar to Last.fm.

“We have already seen that people who share music on social media love Whyd a lot more than Facebook or Twitter, because they are connected to people who share their taste in music,” says Poupardin. The founders hope the service grows from solely a place to save songs into a social community for music discovery.
