ESPN's 'Summer of Santana'

From the NBA Finals to baseball's pennant races, ESPN will be sporting new songs by Santana.

In a first for the cable network, ESPN has licensed three tracks across network platforms from Corazon, released May 6 on RCA. "Saideira" is heard in June and also has been featured on SportsCenter and First Take; "Yo Soy la Luz" is July's soundtrack; and "La Flaca," with a guest turn by Juanes, takes August.

"The conversation started at the [advertising] upfronts," says ESPN music director Kevin Wilson. "'Summer of Santana' rolled off my tongue." He cites the diversity of the music's appeal, which matches the network's audience: predominantly male and a broad mix of ethnicities. ESPN negotiated a single deal to cover multiple uses, and the door remains open for future Santana syncs as well. Says Wilson: "We're seeing how things work out this month."
