Rebecca Batties, Former MTV Exec, Joins Australia's Foxtel For Key Music Role

Rebecca Batties, the former GM of Music Brands for MTV Australia & New Zealand, is joining Foxtel where she will oversee the pay-TV operator’s music channels and digital activities.

With effect from May 5, Batties becomes GM of Foxtel Music Channels and head of digital at Foxtel, the Australian subscription TV platform owned by News Corp and domestic telco Telstra.

“I am absolutely thrilled to join Foxtel,” she says in a statement. “The brief I have been given is all about growth and my focus will be consolidating the impressive success of Foxtel’s music portfolio and maintaining a distinctive Australian voice.”

She’ll be responsible for Foxtel’s music channels -- Channel V, V Hits, MAX, Smooth and CMC, plus Foxtel Tunes -- and she’ll have duties for managing Foxtel's digital operations across its music, movies, lifestyle, factual and general entertainment interests.

A former journalist, Batties joined MTV’s Sydney-based Australian affiliate back in 2008. She exited late last year as the company began scaling-back its presence in the local market and shifting the bulk of its broadcasting operations to London.

Melbourne-born Batties started her career Down Under in college radio and music journalism, before embarking on an impressive international career as a TV exec.

As New York-based VP international programming, marketing and operations in the '90s, Batties played an important role in the launch of MTV in Australia, New Zealand and Russia. She also helped direct the launch of MTV in Italy and Germany, as well as VH1 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Batties then joined Discovery Channel, where she developed Discovery Lifestyle Networks. When she later served as senior VP creative development and brand management, Batties was responsible for the creative direction of the company's various brands marketed outside the U.S.
