Atlantic Records Group Ups Kevin Weaver To President, Film & TV

Kevin Weaver has been promoted to president of film and television for the Atlantic Records Group. He will also retain his current title of executive VP of Atlantic Records Group, a post he has held since 2009.

Weaver oversees the creation and placement of Atlantic-affiliated music across allvisual media -- including film, television, and video games -- and develops and oversees soundtrack projects, strategic alliances, media placements, licensing opportunities and marketing initiatives.

He recently spearheaded the deal for a Coldplay TV special on NBC, oversaw the soundtracks for “Rio 2” and “The Fault in the Stars” and is working on creating a new soundtrack for seventh installment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise. The upcoming “The Fault In Our Stars” features new tracks from Atlantic Records Group artists Ed Sheeran, Birdy, Grouplove and Charlie XCX; “Rio 2” includes new music from Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae, and B.o.B.

For “Fast and Furious 7,” he says, “we’ll A&R a wealth of new recordings. The idea here is to make a record of new, exclusive recordings.”

Atlantic Records Group chairman/CEO Craig Kallman and chairman/COO Julie Greenwald “really understand the importance of this role at the company and they give me a great deal of autonomy to do things I think are right for our artists,” Weaver told Billboard. “The scope has grown.”

Part of that growth relates to Weaver’s 5-year-old music publishing co-venture with Atlantic Records and Warner/Chappell Music. One of his signings, the Royal Concept, has landed more than 50 sync placements in the last year, including “Glee,” a Lipton tea commercial and “American Idol” season launch spots.

“One of the reasons why we started this publishing business was to align ourselves with artists to specifically write for film and TV,” Weaver says. “It’s growing beyond writers and producers. The idea is to create a larger way for us to (participate) in an additional economic upside.”

Weaver, who first joined Atlantic in 1994, has served as producer, executive producer and/or A&R executive on soundtrack albums for HBO’s “Behind The Candelabra” and the series “Girls,” and won a Grammy for the first soundtrack to HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” He is also an executive producer of the upcoming film “Charm City Boys,” with the soundtrack to be released by Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group via Atlantic. He also produced CeeLo Green’s Christmas TV special, “CeeLo’s Magic Moment.”

He helped introduce Christina Perri to Atlantic via a performance on “So You Think You Can Dance” and worked with the Mexico Tourism Board on the music video for Flo Rida’s “Whistle.”

In a statement, Kallman and Greenwald said Weaver “has played an instrumental role in seeking out innovative opportunities for our artists and expanding the reach of their music, while forging exceptional relationships with the film and TV communities.”

In 2006, Weaver became senior VP of Atlantic Records and in 2009 was named executive VP of the Atlantic Records Group.
