Bicycle Music Company, Blues Traveler Ride Together

The Bicycle Music Company and its affiliates have acquired the Blues Traveler publishing catalog including such songs as “Hook”, “The Mountains Win Again”, “Carolina Blues”, “But Anyway” and “Run-Around.” Terms of the deal were not disclosed. 

The band has sold almost 10 million records worldwide, according to the announcement.

"To be associated with songs like these, it's fantastic. We all grew up seeing the band perform and radio play," said Bicycle co-president Steve Salm.  "Their catalog fits in perfectly with the catalog we’ve set out to build here.” 

Andrew Fromm of Fromm Consulting, LLC., brokered the transaction. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.


Downtown, Notable Strike Global Administration Deal

Downtown Music Publishing has signed a worldwide publishing administration agreement with Notable Music Co. Inc., which was founded by legendary composer Cy Coleman and controls the rights to such songs as “The Best Is Yet To Come,” “Witchcraft,” “Big Spender,” “Never Can Say Goodbye,” and “Sunny." Notable’s current roster of songwriters and artists includes such diverse names as Rosanne Cash, Sam Phillips, Chico Mann, Jenny O., and Tift Merritt.

"When he wasn’t busy contributing to the Great American Songbook or scoring many iconic, award winning Broadway musicals, Songwriters Hall of Fame Member Cy Coleman built one of the finest song collections of his time," Downtown Music Publishing president Justin Kalifowitz said in a statement. "We couldn’t be more delighted to represent this historic catalog and partner with [Notable Music GM Damon Booth] in growing the Notable business for years to come.”

In other deals, Downtown Music Publishing has signed North American sub-publishing deals with Dipiu Music -- home to songwriter/producer Sandy Vee among others; Crunchy Frog, an indie Danish publishing company and record label with a roster that includes Thao, Thee Attacks, Powersolo, Heavy Trash; and Lucky Number, a London based independent record label which just launched their publishing division. 


Another Victory Expands Global Network

Another Victory Inc., the sister publishing company to Victory Records which represents a catalog of over 5,000 songs, has signed a slate of sub-publishing deals. Another Victory, founded in 1997, will now be represented by the David Gresham Record Company for Africa; Gulliver Music Publishing for Israel; Basement Brazil for that country; Clipper's Music for Spain and Portugal; and Mushroom Music Publishing for Australia and New Zealand. 

In making the latter announcement, Victory founder Tony Brummel described Mushroom as "the best-of-breed music publisher in their region while retaining a truly independent spirit. This deal will help widen the potential exposure for our artist’s songs along with other benefits as Another Victory continues to grow internationally."

For his part, Mushroom Music Publishing managing director Ian James said in a statement that Victory "acts will fit well with the Mushroom Music roster as we have a considerable history of publishing guitar bands in Australia and New Zealand."


Warner/Chappell, Aloe Blacc Ink Worldwide Pub Deal

Warner/Chappell Music has signed a worldwide publishing agreement with vocalist and songwriter Aloe Blacc, which covers his entire "Wake Me Up" EP including his portion of the co-written title track which is a hit for Swedish DJ's Avicii. But outside the U.S, the deal includes the rest of the tracks on the EP, except for the title track. The deal also cover all future songwrting including Blacc's up-coming third solo album "Lift Your Spirit."

“Aloe is an extraordinary singer, a brilliant songwriter and storyteller, and a truly charismatic performer,” Warner/Chappell Music North America president John Platt said in a statement.  “His music brings a genre-crossing range of influences together into a unique, compelling voice all his own.  I believe Aloe is a truly timeless artist who has only scratched the surface of his enormous talent."

In addition to an acoustic version of the title song, the five-song EP includes “The Man,” which is featured in the current Beats by Dre commercial featuring basketball star Kevin Garnett.

In another deal, Warner/Chappell Music and its joint venture publishing partner Combustion Music have extended their worldwide co-publishing agreement with country songwriter Ashley Gorley, whose songs include Luke Bryan’s “That’s My Kind Of Night” and Randy Houser’s “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight.” Billboard named Gorley, the No. 1 Country Songwriter of 2013; to date, he has written over 100 songs recorded by over 50 artists, according to the announcement.

“Ashley is a master of crafting hit songs, and his track record is nothing short of extraordinary,” Warner/Chappell Music Nashville executive VP Ben Vaughn said in a statement. 

"Ashley's incredibly unique combination of songwriting talent and market focus is unparalleled in today's popular music,” said Combustion Music president Chris Farren.


Disney Teams With Jess Cates

Disney Music Publishing has signed an exclusive worldwide co-publishing agreement  with Jess Cates for songs written with  Emanuel “Eman” Kiriakou. “When you have a chance to work with a writer like Jess, who has written so many amazing songs for such a diverse group of artists, you jump at it," Disney Music Group senior VP of A&R/head of creative Mio Vukovic said in a statement.


Universal Music, Alejandro Sanz Sign Multi-Year Deal

Universal Music Pubishing Group has signed an exclusive worldwide publishing agreement with latin singer/songwriter Alejandro Sanz in a multi-year deal. Sanz’ entire catalog of songs come to UMPG, including the music on his first nine studio albums, as well as songs he writes in the future.

“For over two decades, Alejandro Sanz has been one of the most iconic and popular Latin singer/songwriters in the world, UMPG chairman/CEO Zach Horowtiz said in a statement. "His music is timeless and touches the heart and soul. We’re honored to now represent his entire catalog, and that his future will be with Universal Music Publishing.” 

Universal Music Latin America & Iberian Peninsula chairman CEO Jesús López added, "The Universal Music family is very pleased with Alejandro's decision to expand his relation with Universal Music Publishing, adding to his worldwide record contract his publishing rights."


BMG Chrysalis, Eleven Seven Agree On Worldwide Administration Pact

The Eleven Seven Music Group has signed an exclusive worldwide administration agreement with BMG Chrysalis, covering both master and publishing rights. The companies will work together to secure sync opportunities for Eleven Seven's roster.

"Allen and his team are long-time specialists in successfully managing and marketing established and emerging artist," says BMG Chrysalis U.S. president Laurent Hubert in a statement. "We are looking forward to working with them internationally to create a one-stop-shop service for artists on the roster."

BMG has "invested in a global infrastructure that is a perfect synergy for our future growth," Eleven Seven Music Group CEO Allen Kovac said in a statement.

In another deal, BMG Chrysalis and its joint venture partner Big Deal Music has signed an exclusive worldwide publishing agreement with songwriter John Ryan, who has co-written multiple One Direction songs, including "Best Song Ever." Additional he has co-written songs cut by Avicii and Olly Murs, among others.


Reservoir Signs Phantogram

Reservoir has signed New York duo Phantogram to a co-publishing deal that will include its new album "Voices," which is slated to street on Feb. 18, as well as its recent EP. Later in the year, it will also include the duo's previous releases "Eyelid Movies," and "Nightlife." Further, the deal includes individual songwriter agreements for the band members, Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter. In addition to focusing on sync opportunities, Reservoir will also work toward securing outside co-writing opportunities for Barthel and Carter, according to Reservoir senior  VP of creative and business development Faith Newman.

"There were several publishers vying to work with the band – a lot of great people and companies," Barsuk Records co-founder and Phantogram manager Josh Rosenfeld said in a statement  "In addition to bringing well-established international resources to bear on the band’s work, it was clear that Reservoir's values and strategies aligned with ours.  They understand the character of Phantogram, and the music’s roots in indie rock, hip-hop, and shoegaze; they respect Josh and Sarah as writers and artists; and they’re comfortable with the sometimes unusual combination of our indie-informed managerial approach and the band’s new major label context at Republic. It’s exciting to have us all working together so well immediately out of the gate." 


Steve Lewis Joins SynchTank

SynchTank, which provides a turnkey solution to help music content owners license their songs to music supervisors for commercials, TV shows and film, has added Steve Lewis to its board of directors. Lewis, who also made an investment in the company, is a veteran music industry professional who most recently headed up Stage Three Music, which was sold to BMG Rights Management.


Reel Muzic Werks, Morris Music Agree To Administration Deal

Reel Muzic Werks has signed a global, multi-year administration deal with Morris Music, which covers such songs as "Mandy," and "Hang On Sloopy." The company has also reached a global deal to represent songwriter/producer/recording artist Gordie Johnson and his 500 Pounds Of Publishing catalog.

Finally, the company entered into a multi-faceted agreement with SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment to assist in the publishing administration, licensing and clearance needs of SeaWorld programming such as the "Sea Rescue" TV show. Additionally, Reel Muzik Werks will serve as music rights management consultant across the spectrum of SeaWorld bands and parks.
