Aquil Abdur-Rasheed, owner of the three-store Music-N-More chain in Birmingham, Ala., was shot dead last night during an apparent robbery at his Phillips Drive outlet, according to The Birmingham News

Aquil Abdur-Rasheed, owner of the three-store Music-N-More chain in Birmingham, Ala., was shot dead last night during an apparent robbery at his Phillips Drive outlet, according to The Birmingham News. He was in his late 50s.

"Aquil is very well known in the industry and participated in debates at the highest levels," said Don VanCleave, president of the Coalition of Independent Music Stores, in an e-mail to label and distribution executives who deal with the coalition. "This is a very sad loss for the indie store community and for Birmingham."

According to the newpaper, Abdur-Rasheed was active in the community, participating in programs to take care of the needy and homeless.

In 1998, Abdur-Rasheed won the Birmingham-Metro Jefferson Chamber of Commerce's Distinguished Service Award for exemplary service in the African-American community, according to the report.

In addition to the store where the shooting occured, the chain has outlets in Five Points West and the Heritage Towne Centre.
